How to Design a Pre-Treatment Line for Consistent Coating Quality

A pre-treatment line is often viewed as a series of tanks or spray chambers.

In reality, it is a carefully controlled process designed to produce a consistent surface before coating.

A typical system may include:

Degreasing → Rinse → Surface Conditioning → Conversion Coating → Rinse → Final Rinse → Dry-Off

Step 1: Understand the Substrate

Before designing the line, determine:

  • Mild steel
  • Galvanized steel
  • Aluminium
  • Stainless steel
  • Mixed substrates

Different substrates may require different chemical processes.

Step 2: Understand the Coating

The pre-treatment should be compatible with the final coating.

Step 5: Design the Rinsing System

Rinsing is often underestimated.

Poor rinsing can carry contaminants from one stage to another.

  • Final rinse quality
  • DI water requirement

Step 6: Drying

Before coating, the product must be adequately dry.

A dry-off system may use:

  • Air knives

Step 7: Process Monitoring

Depending on the chemical system, monitoring may include:

  • pH
  • Temperature
  • Concentration
  • Conductivity
  • Flow
  • Pressure
  • Tank level
  • Filter differential pressure

A pre-treatment line should be designed around the required surface condition, not simply the number of tanks.
